I read a book as a child, and loved it, but cannot remember its title. Can anyone recognise it from these patchy memories? This was probably 25 or so years ago.

It was basically a science fiction novel for (I reckon) a 10 year old, about a boy who flies around a number of planets in his own small spaceship. On one of the planets, he is surrounded by stone like objects that move very slowly, and I think he gets surrounded by them after falling asleep in them. I seem to recall another scene where he lands his spaceship on his school playing field and burns it with the engines. I think they also played a game a bit like polo in spaceships.

Granted, it doesn't sound too inspiring, but I can remember a real magical sense to it, and I've been trying to remember it so I can read it to my son.

Please note: thanks for the suggestions, but I'm not thinking of "The Little Prince".

Not sure if it is - but it sounds like it could be a Nicholas Fisk book - he wrote "Grinny" and "Trillions" which were superb childrens science fiction books and this sounds similar.

It sounds like the 1943 classic novel "The Little Prince" by Antoine de Saint Exupery. It is still a very popular novel and can be bought at any bookstore. Hope this is the right one!!!

Sounds like a GREAT book. I grew up reading tons of sci-fi books like the one that you described. Unfortunately, I cannot provide the title. It's probably out of print by now, but I wish you luck.

It is most definitely 'The Little Prince'- one of the most famous and translated books of all time-The author was a French pilot and I think a new biography has just been published about him. Such a wonderful book to give to your son and to reread yourself!

I bear in concepts examining that too. If I bear in concepts suitable there have been 4 babies - Jack, Phillip, Lucy-Ann, Dinah, and Kiki the Parrot or Cockatoo. i think of it grew to become into referred to as the Island of adventure, and it grew to become into via Enid Blyton. don't be responsive to if that grew to become into the comparable e book, yet Puffin Island sounds generic. desire this helps!
