I would say none of the above and most of the studies being done by remnants of the Roman empire which remained in the UK and France, although the 'assimilation' (for want of a better word) that the Romans were so fond of may have resulted in scientific studies eventually being credited to cultures which the romans taught to tabulate such things, eg, The Celts and the Picts, and later the Anglo-Saxons.

These kind thinkers are the source of todays present scientific method. We "discovered" the scientific method during the crusade and as the "victors" got to attribute it to our own ability.
