I am a programming major, but I am only in my 2nd quarter. I haven't taken any specific classes for my major, just electives, so my knowledge of programming is pretty limited. For my Comm 3 class, I must write a memo report about a problem I may face as a programmer, and several solutions for that problem. Would any programmers mind telling me about a work-related problem they've had, a few different solutions, and the solution they used to solve the problem? Thanks so much!

What I need is a specific programming issue, and a few solutions for the problem.

Here is an answer to your question:

Problem 1:

You are responsible for crafting a mini program that is used with other webservices to drive a business portal website. You have written, compiled, and released your code, but someone else writes a loop that ignores your module rather than follow standard in order to make their job easier. What do you do?

First, you have your original instructions, your original released code, and the steps before and after your part of the process so that you can tell in the integration test whether your code is being used properly.

Second, as soon as you see that you've been sabotaged, you raise a code variance or 'bug' issue and explain in the log, in an email to your boss and the person, and by voicemail what you see as the problem for not following standards.

I suggest that you get a tutorial about computer programming and follow it so that you can become familiar with the language, the general attitudes and other requirements for the world you're joining. You might even start to hang around friends that like to 'fool around' with programming in their spare time and see a little of what they do.

Don't be discouraged because you don't have a long background in programming. Many girls don't, and do just as well as the guys anyway.

I've written at least 10,000 programs over my career. Here is a typical thing I would do: Client buys brand new Sales Order forms or they get in a new order of Checks and the alignment needs to be adjusted. This is very typical stuff. Here's another... the State of New Jersey just created a new income tax. The rules are as follows. The employer pays .025% of the employees wages up to $10,000. The employee pays .025% up to $10,000 but after that the employer pays nothing but the employees portion is reduced to .014% with no maximum. Create a table and modify the payroll routine to handle this. Print the infomation on the check stub. Store the information in the history file as the employee may write this off at the Federal Level. Yep.... it really is like that.
