Ok. My gf's son's computer we just gave him is running unbelievebly slow. I mean it crawls. Like 10 minutes to boot and it can take forever to load a screen on the internet. Forget even thinking about downloading anything. I think maybe it could use some more RAM. It only has 128. Can anyone else here give me some ideas as to what it may be. It is an emachines. 2.2 celeron processor, 128 mb ram, 40 GB HD. Any ideas would be great. Thanks.

512MB of RAM is really the minimum these days, BUT, no computer should take that long to load Windows, no matter what. It sounds like there's something wrong somewhere else. I would recommend reinstalling Windows. Not all installations turn out properly.

WOW 128mb ram is tiny. If you are runing Windows XP, it takes a HUGE amount of memory- at least 512Mb to run decent. Try getting some more ram, but if that dosnt help than chances are your processor cant handle the ammount of information, and you must upgrade. But before you do anything do this:

1) Defrag your Hard Drive
2) Run A Virus Check
3) Clean up un-nessicary programs and files
4) Completely Shut-Down, and Re-Start

- This is just a general, 'cover-all-your-bases' approach that may find the problem or just help out a little bit

As for the internet, Dial-up sucks. If it is not on dial-up you have something seriously wrong and you should call your ISP (internet service provider).

Not much you can do except add more RAM. The 2.2 celeron is maybe 2 or 3 generations old. Get rid of any unnecessary programs during startup should shorten the boot up time. Get rid of any unwanted files. Defrag the hard drive. See if you can upgrade the processer to a faster one. Sounds like it's one of the older emachines and not much you can do to upgrade.

WinXP requires 128 megs of ram just to function. And your machine is a good one, I own 2 of them. But I run two 512 ram chips. But even with the 128 it did OK. Something like that I would need to walk you through what to check, Cant answer that here without typing for the next hour. YIM and email on this id

Take these few steps. It will hopefully improve the performance of the computer.

a) De-fragment your C:\ Drive.

b) Delete and clean you Internet Files / Cookies / Temp / History Files.

c) Delete all Unwanted / Unused Programs.

d) Increasing the RAM will surely help.

e) See that the computer is not infested with Viruses / Mal-ware / Ad-ware / Worms etc.

f) Know that Celeron is always slower than Pentium.

all specs are good enough except for 128 mb of ram, if you can add 256 mb , that would be better.. though thats not the only case, your computer has running so slow, i suggest that you should back up the files and format your drive, then install a windows... defrag, disk cleanup, scandisk would also make the computer run fast,, though i still suggest to format... then add 256mb of ram...

wow... if its new... then.. return it and get a new one.. This computer cost you like 200 bucks? o_O Cause man.. im not gunna like to you.. its a piece of crap.. sorry... the minimum.. and i mean MINIMUM is 512.. I didn't know they still made 128 mb of ram.. you cant expect it to even "jog".. But 10 min to boot windows.. is ridiculous....celeron is like the watered down version of pentium... also.. *sigh* not very good..... 40 GB harddrive.. not the biggest in the world -_- i say return it and get a new one..

A new machine should not be running that slow for any of the usual reasons. You have not had it long enough to get much spyware and even if so, would not load that slow.

If you got it from Wal-Mart, (That's where I got mine.) Box it up and exchange it. You have some sort of hardware problem that is dragging your CPU speed to nothing.

Scan for viruses, trojans and spyware... too many unnecessary programs running at start-up...check task manager for running processes, over 25 to 30 on a machine like that one is too many...and above all add RAM to bring it up to 384 to 512 mb.

I would take the recovery CD that the computer came with, like Windows XP or any recovery disk for E machines and I would reinstall everything! This will take 15-30 minutes and it WILL DELETE ALL FILES!!! But it will make it run alot faster!
