Try right clicking on it before it dissapears and looking in the properties section to see if it is set to automaticly hide, if all else fails you can get it to come back using this repair utility, i've used it before it works!

The start menu is supposed to disappear when you are not using it. If you want the task bar and it's not there, just request it in the view menu.

Use

Ctrl-Esc

to bring up the start button.

control-esc will bring it back.
