The larger-than-life Irwin, 44, known for his fearlessly enthusiastic handling of even the deadliest of wildlife, was killed when a stingray barb punctured his chest during underwater filming on the Great Barrier Reef.

"He came over the top of a stingray and the stingray's barb went up and went into his chest and put a hole into his heart," said the ebullient Irwin's longtime producer John Stainton, who was with him at the time.

"It's likely that he possibly died instantly when the barb hit him, and I don't think that he ... felt any pain," a tearful Stainton told reporters in the city of Cairns Monday.

Police and officials at Irwin's zoo confirmed his death in the freak incident that took place at about 11:00 am (0100 GMT) off the coast of Port Douglas in the northeastern Australian state of Queensland.

Irwin was evacuated from his boat by helicopter and ambulance service officials said he had suffered a puncture wound to the left side of his chest and was immediately pronounced dead.

Stingrays have several sharp and venomous barbs on their tails that they use to defend themselves when they feel threatened, but Stainton insisted that Irwin had not provoked the creature while filming.
AND TO JUST CLEAR UP ANY MORE REPORTS SAYING THAT HE WAS ANNOYING THE STING RAYS..THE QUEENSLAND POLICE DO HAVE THE FOOTAGE WITH THEM AND IT ACTUALLY SHOWS STEVE BEEN HIT BY THE STING RAY..POLICE HAVE RULED OUT THAT STEVE WAS ANNOYING THEM, HE WAS JUST IN THE WRONG PLACE AT THE WRONG TIME. IT WAS SIMPLY A FREAK ACCIDENT!

That was very unfortunate for Irwin. We always enjoyed watching him taunt the animals but he knew what he was doing.

The stingray's barb went into his heart putting a hole in it. He was filming a documentary but I bet he was doing more with that stingray that caused it to re-act in the manner in which it did, resulting in Irwin getting killed.

It is very sad for his family. My son really liked this guy. He wishes that the stingray had only injured Irwin rather than killing him.

When it is your time to go, it is your time to go. I guess he was doing what he loved to do.

His family has our condolences. :-(

Actually, the tail of the Stingray which is more like a very hard bone pierced his chest and struck his heart. He must've bled internally. What a terrible loss. He loved what he was doing and I think that is the way he wanted to go. His inspired a lot of people to appreciate nature. He will surely be missed

He got stabbed in the heart by a stingray barb, because he was swimming over the stingray.
and he died in the helicopter on the way to the hospital

It was actually a poisonous sting from a stingray that went through his rib cage, pierced his heart and out the back.

It is truly sad :(
