It is important, that, the colonies were tired of British rule, taxes, and felt they were and could be self-sufficient. Politics will always be something that man disagrees with, and when men have a following and support in their beliefs and ideas, they become powerful. When people form together towards a common goal, it becomes a wave.
This was not only a message to the world's superpower that we no longer wished to be under British rule. This was a message that said we are no longer colonials...but we are Americans. The free world was no longer an adolescent, but was declaring that it was an adult.

It was a statement of principles, regarding why (what would become) the US broke away from rule by England.
It doesn't have one meaning, other than what the names says -- a declaration that these state shall become an independent nation.

Okay.... It's important because the colonists were tired of paying taxes to British government without any say so. Our founding fathers, led by Thomas Jefferson, got tired of this and basically told the British crown to shove it... we're going it alone and going to start our own representative government.... without you.
'nuff said?

Its an offical statement that we are no longer reliant on another government to support us. It was really a way to tell England that we weren't going to live under their rule anymore. Sort of an offical, we want out, kind of thing. Naturally, they weren't going to give us up without a fight.
