Actually - mt Everest is the HIGHEST mountain on earth. The tallest mountain being the tallest from base to summit and that is Kilimonjaro in East Africa. It is the "highest free-standing" mountain

Everest is on top of a higher mountain range - the himalayas, Kilimonjaro just pops out of the savanna

The tallest mountain on the planet is not Mt. Everest, which is only 29 028 ft/8848 m high! The tallest mountain in the world is actually Mauna Kea, in Hawaii, which is closer to 31 000 ft/
9449 m high.

You just can't see the two-thirds of the mountain that is under water.

although everyone is saying mt everest and it is generally accepted to be true K2 would be the tallest if they used the newer way of measuring the height as there are now new parameters for this which would make K2 taller by a couple of hundred meters or so!!
