Not necessarily is that actually important. I myself can usually tell when you're being a smartass. So I think you're doing just fine.

Ok, so maybe I can't tell sometimes.

Ok- so it's never! There! So I'm a dumbass!! Well?? Which would you rather be?? GOSH!!

Yes, it is. Basically, only about 10% of communication has to do with the words that are communicated. The rest is imparted by tone, inflection, body language. Without those tools, communication becomes much more difficult.

I am usually considered a smart *** myself and have had to learn to dial it back a bit in writing because I don't have the use of non-verbal communication tools.

Emoticons might help some.

Tone and inflection are what makes the reader understand the authors emotion. I'm currently in a Creative Writing class and the professor stresses tone. If you want to come across as a smartass you have to use descriptive words of why you want to be like that and only write from experience. It can be difficult, but it gets easier the more you write.

I find often my words come out totally different that what I intended. Often my thoughts are miles ahead of what I am typing and somehow there is a disconnect at times.

It just takes another smarta s s to recognize a fellow smarta s s.... :))

Yep, written words can be interpreted different ways, take for example "wanna do it" what am I talking about? whats "it"? Tone and infection is the whole difference there.

I suggest putting (sarcasm) after what you write, in case there's any doubt.

Maybe because deep in your heart you really don't want to be that way.
