I don't listen to hip hop. I listen to metal. I don't wear JLo or Ecko. I wear Tripp and KikGirl. I don't go to hip hop clubs. I go to Goth clubs. I don't speak Ebonics. I speak English. I like MMORPGS and reading and CNN.

Why does that make me "white"? Why can't I do all those things still be "black"? Is that all we are? Clothes, music and clubbing?

It's not that I'm insecure. I LOVE me just the way I am. I'm curious as to the motivation of these people. I mean, I'm 20 years old and my peers, who are supposed to be adults are the ones who do this.

People always reject what they don't understand.

Look, I know what you're talking about! People feel that just because you don't listen to "black music" or dress like "black people" that you're a sell-out...I know what you're going through because I also don't listen to hip hop and I don't wear "ghetto-gear" either and I talk proper ...I've been treated bad only by the black girls not the black guys...it's never the guys, for some reason I don't know, but I've always had problems with black girls...but anyway, they're probably giving you problems because they were raised differently...when they see another black person who is not acting within the "norm" of the other black people then it bothers them because it's something different and they don't understand. Sadly, when these types of black people act this way towards other black people, then they prove all of the stereotypes to be correct, that "you're not black if you don't talk this way or if you don't listen to this type of music, etc..." so, don't pay those types of black people any mind, but also don't refuse friendship of a black person if they so happen to listen to hip hop, speak ebonics, and wear hip-hop gear either...keep your options opened, not all black people who dress a certain way or litsen to a certain type of music different than you will be mean...if you think this, then you're doing the same thing they are doing. So be careful not to sabotage things.

I have the same problem - as you can see in the pic i'm a little darker then normal for my race. Native american/Japanese. So blk ppl think i'm blk. They see me with my fionce who is white with blue eyes and get mad when they see we have a child together, who is very white.
Then when they hear his name Ryu (japanese) they say i'm ethnicly chanllanged. I also listen to rock and metal and am pretty much a goth like girl. i have no idea who the latest rapper is nor any of the names. i speak very different and act compleatly different. I've even had my hair pulled to see if it's real (that really hurt to) i've never dated a blk guy either. it's only after i tell them what i am that they realize the mistake. This happend mostly in the south while i was in college.
i think they believe you are shamed to be blk. but little do they know being blk has nothing to do with ones personality. Be you for you, no one else can change that. :)

For the same reason some white kids, who like Hip-hop and wear baggy pants, get ridicule from their peers. They don't fit the herd's standard identity.

Black is just a shade. Tell them you're redefining the term. Like what you like, and find friends that like you for you.

Keep doing your thing. I'm mixed w/black and half the time I can't stand listening to rap. Money, cars, and hoes doesn't do it for me. I'm the same way except I'm not much into the goth thing. Don't listen to what other people say about you. By trying to be all things to other people..you're just hurting yourself.

people are gonna make fun of u regardless... I'm not exactly the "blackest" person in the world... but whatever... I think if u make comments like "i don't listen to hip hop or wear Ecko" they're gonna make fun of u, because ur insulting them, and judging them... stereotyping them based on what they listen to or wear, just like u say they're doing to u for listening to metal... Let's stop trying to be politically correct u know what things are considered "black" and what "acting white" is... People are just ignorant and can't except people as doing their own thing... just doing what interest them and not following the trend. It pisses me off that people don't want to be defined by their race but are quick to tell someone that they "act white"... and they should be "black"... but they don't really want those labels to exist. They probably make fun of u because they feel like ur trying to be something ur not... or embarassed to "act black" ur not "accepeting ur blackness"... and just ignore that BS... u know who u are...

Just be you as long as you love yourself 4 who you are you shouldn't care what they think. Its just you were brought up differt than they were. Same with me and my sister. We listen to pop music in stead of rap. We talk really proper like you are supposeed to. I've gotten over it, and lived my life. So what if they say i'm the whitest black boy they ever met. Who cares!

I dont even want to answer this because you have so many answers already, and I hate getting tons of ppl answering BUT

I hear you gurl. I listen to Alternative, not a big goth fan, I also listen to rock and some ppl are like dude you are so white.

I dont wear baggy jeans, I dont know what kikko is but I wear Ambercrombie, I shop there and at Pac Sun, and American Eagle yada yada yada

Even my white friends are like, dude your white but its all fun and jokes anyway....well some black ppl are like dude your not white stop acting like it.

I speak "proper" english. I say stuff like doggy and thats hot and apparently dude a lot but I AM ME!!!

Im still cool w/ the black ppl that say this and they learned that I am who I am so we are cool.

Maybe you should let them get to know you instead of just dismissing them when they say this.

I do like RnB though....not a lot but like boys 2 men and mariah carey i dont like whats his name.....umm I dunno well hope i helped peace dude.

oh and im 21

Some people do not understand what being an individual means they follow trends and do not like to be different. These people usually do not have the self confidence to be different!
I would not worry they need to accept you for who you are not who they think you should be.
Good luck and sounds like you are on the right track.

your choices don't make you anymore or less black. It's just an enigma as to why even in this day and age a woman of color would consider socializin' in an atmosphere where there are so few blacks. It sounds more like you are not only tryin' to physically seperate yourself from your given race but also mentally as well. I wish you luck with that.
