Others have touched on the role of the industrialists and inventors, for example, Ford and Edison, who helped create the industrial revolution of the early 1900's.
I'll wind the clock backwards to the 1860's and mention Abraham Lincoln, who preserved the Union and forever changed the face of North America by ending slavery. I can't imagine what America would look like had the Confederacy survived and slavery continued, for who knows how many more years.
Since I've mentioned a Republican president, I'll add a Democrat--Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who in the 1930's led America out of the Great Depression, in the 1940's brought America to victory in World War II, and throughout his presidency ushered in social programs such as Social Security that have helped make life in America as extraordinary in the world as it is.

What do you mean by "modern" America? America the country? America since WWII? America since the Vietnam war? America in the 21st Century? And what do you mean by creation? Ex nihilo?
America the country and its system of government owes a lot to the Iroquois Indians. The America we have since World War II was shaped in large part by President Truman, who recognized Israel (and started the whole influence of Israelis on the US government), dropped the first atomic weapons (probably unnecessarily), and started the trend of expanding the military from a defensive to an offensive force. The America we have in the 21st Centrury is largely shaped by the knee-jerk reaction of Mr. Bush to the 9/11 events, making the country one governed by fear, paranoia, greed, and a citizenry prone to delusions and emotional hysteria.

Thomas Alva Edison - but for the invention of "invention, American style."
His labs at Menlo Park and East Orange, NJ were the basis of almost ALL the major inventions that changed America AND the world. Every major technology company from Apple Computer to Xerox are descendants of Edison's way of dreaming up, creating and developing products...

While many people and factors contributed to modern day America, I think Ford revolutionized our country with his invention of the car, specifically Model T. Families who lived in one place all their lives, now have mobility to travel to new places. Courtship changed. Suburbs flourished. Voila! Here we are today!

I don't know if it can be reduced to one person. But I would say that if a segment could be responsible, it would be the media.
