You can't do log 3 (729) directly. However, log 729 / log 3 and ln 729 / ln 3 are both equivalent. Since you know it's a whole number, you could also convert the equation log 3 (729) = x into exponential form, getting 3^x=729, and solve that way.
Hope I've helped! =)

"LOG3 729" is a number like x that 3^x=729.
Calculators always calculate LOG10 729 for you.
However the way you can use to get the answer is to divide LOG 729 to LOG 3. LOG(729) / LOG(3) = 6.

How To Do Log Equations

The TI-83 will only do common logs (base 10) and natural logs. To do other bases, use the change of base formula:

log b n = log n / log b

So you would enter log(729)/log(3)

log(3)729 = (log(729))/(log(3)) = 6
