Some email programs have what's known as a "return receipt" - this is an email that gets sent back to you automatically telling you when the recipient has received or opened an email. They usually get the option to send it or not though. Check in the mail options or use the Help file to find out how to do it in your email program/client.

Despite what others have told you, checking or asking for a receipt does no good if the person does not wish a receipt to be sent back to you. The option exists to not acknowledge receipt, I know as I never do.

Basically, unless you are using the internet with training wheels of AOL or the fad of the moment of myspace you can't know. You can't have everything.

If you are using Outlook / Outlook Express
When composing your email, from the tools menu check the box "Request Read Receipt"
You did not say which email client you are using so I cannot help you any more.
Some email clients have this option, others do not.
