to wipe everything off the hard drive you have to reformat the HARD DRIVE and then repartition it not an easy task for a complete novice. seek help from a computer geek.

Turn off your computer.

Turn on the computer and while it begins the boot-up process press F2 or whatever F-button your system requires to enter the setup for BIOS.

Once in the BIOS, make your way to the boot order screen and move the CD-ROM to the first position, making sure that the hard drive comes after the CD-ROM.

Exit out of the BIOS setup saving it as you go.

Make sure you have the XP CD in the CD drive when the computer restarts.

Your computer should now boot to the XP CD.

If you want to wipe your hard drive completely clean, follow the prompts to format the drive and select NTFS. If your drive shows any partitions during this process, delete them. (Do NOT delete them if this is where your computer manufacturer loaded the back up software.)

Once the computer formats the hard drive, your XP installation will begin. The process can take as long as an hour, or as little as 20 minutes, depending on the processor speed.

BEFORE you begin the installation, disconnect any of the extra devices you have connected to the computer. I suggest that you NOT use a wireless mouse and keyboard during the installation - if possible.

Good luck!

Only after you get it wiped. Do you have a system restore disk, or function built into your desktop? If so, activate that and proceed from there. If not, take it to a computer place (Best Buy near me will restore a system for $59) and have it wiped. Then reinstall xp.
