none of them are foolproof

Reliable, comprehensive and powerful? That's a tall order. For just doing a damn good job, try Nod32. (Yes, I know you've never heard of it. Who cares?)

In tests, 8 out of 10 malicious files ran screaming from it. The other 2 didn't bother to turn up.

Advice? Stay clear from anything with the words Mcaffe, Norton or Symantec in its name.

avast! Home (the free edition) is an acceptable and quite comprehensive alternative that won't cost you a penny.

Ad aware and Spy Bot are fine but one needs anti virus also.
I use Avast Home Edition in combination with Spybot and CCleaner and so far everything is fine.
Symantec's Norton programmes are technicians' nightmares and although I swore by them in the past I am inclined to think they are more of a nuisance than anything and expensive.
Not tried AVG but hear good things

hello,
Norton Anti Virus and Symantec Anti Virus are the same company and one of the worst along with McAfee. Trendmicro-pc chillin is the top of the line anti virus. If you want a free antivirus that is very good get "AVG".
Best of luck

I'd go for AVG because of the following reasons

1. It's Licence FREE
2. I have noticed low Resource utilisation by the AV(anti - Virus). (Speed on other operations)
3. Have saved Virus problems many times while other AVs doesn't detect them.

Also i know places where ppl uses AVG on networks while another licenced AV is also used.( mean those ppl also trusts )

Well I am an IT supervisor in a university. For years windows security has been a real problem for us to handle. many users use the same computer, download stuff, go to crap websites with spy ware content. finally we came to a solution:
intalled McAfee Anti virus
Cleared Spyware regularly every week with AdAware personal (free program lavasoft.com)
and disabled Internet Explorer and forced users to use Mozilla firefox.
Firfox has very strong security.

It was absolutly succesful. We have no problems with viruses and spywares anymore.
Hope it helps

The most reliable is Trend Micro Pc Cillin Internet Security 2006. Norton and McAfee are bloatware. AVG and Avast! are free however dont do as good as Trend Micro. But dont take my word for it, check out cNet's reviews.

hi, perhaps you can try Norton to remove the virus. but you need to pay for the software.

i also recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can disable all virus to run, because the virus can only run on IE.

besides, firefox can block any any poppus and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE. as you know, most of the virus is spread throught internet and webpage.

firefox is much smaller than IE, so i run faster than IE.

download firefox for free:

Anti-virus? AVG of course.
It's free and very good!!!!

However, anti-virus do not catch spywares and adwares.
Use Spybot Search & Destroy, SpywareBlaster and Ad-Aware.
