I just read that in a news article and was shocked! He was so cool. If it's true -- what embarrased you about him? If it isn't true--please set me straight!

No way! We all love him. He is a legend and will live on in Australian memeory and folk-law longer than most of us. I think he will be remembered as an incredible ambassador, and defining personality of the late 90's in Australian history.
Some people were bothered by his celebration and over-use of jingoisms, stereotypical Australianisms and strong accent. But to be honest, he has done an incredible ammount for wildlife conservation and awaremness in Australia. Many may not know, but he and his wife were buying up great tracks of old growth forest in Tasmania's wilderness to protect it from logging....
A legend in his own lunchtime as we say at home....

Ashamed? I doubt whether Australians were ashamed. The issue 'some' people had with Steve was that he represented an old style stereotypical Aussie male that we have since moved on from. This type of character was epitomised some 40-odd years ago as the 'typical' Aussie male but not now.

Ashamed - No way! Cringe worthy - Yes! Regardless, the guy had a passion that needed to be respected and any Australian who helps tell the world about this great country should be applauded and that's what I think people here in Australia are doing at the moment.

Trust this gives you a hometown perspective.

No...there was an incident a couple of years ago after his baby son was born, where he was holding the child while being filmed with a crocodile. It was a potentially dangerous thing to do...but we all make mistakes. There was a public outcry and Steve Irwin apologized. That is the ONLY negative thing I've ever heard about the man

No that is not true. There were perhaps a few that he annoyed but even they would admit begrudgingly that they respected him. His approach may have been a little unorthodox, however it was successful. He has opened the mind of adults and children alike to the causes he fought for. He made documentaries popular and interesting to watch. Sorry we are all still a bit numb and shell shocked here in OZ. I don't think any Australians were or are embarrassed by him.

An interview with Steve was repeated here last night which was made when Terri was about to give birth to their son, Bob.
The interviewer, Andrew Denton, posed this question to Steve.
His reaction was that all Aussies saw a little bit of themselves in himself. He joked about it lightheartedly.
We loved him, laughed at his enthusiasm which was contagious but wholeheartedly admired him.
His loss is devastating.

Australians weren't ashamed of him at all.
He was a great man who did wonders for the environment.
His "Crikey" persona was a little farfetched, and the less inteligent US folk thought ALL Aussies were like him, but that just cemented our belief in USA's blind faith of their own media.
It's funny how you guys believe everything you read without doing your own research.

I think some may have thought he was a bit corny with the "crickey" thing and all, and perhaps some were embarassed about the Baby Bob incident, but I think overall most people respect what he was doing.

i will never forget the image of steve irwin talking to the camera while sharks were in a feeding frenzy all around him while he stood in the water...the guy was a crazy kook but he was fascinating, funny and very entertaining...i kind of felt one day his luck would run out the way he took risks dealing with wildlife but i would never have guessed it would take a stingray to be the culprit....my condolences to his friends and family....he was one of a kind and his legacy will continue as his shows run on animal planet

I heard this on TV today - Yes, they were embarrassed by him at first in the early years, but later changed their minds when they realized he was becoming a big time conservationist.

He will be greatly missed. I feel just horrible for Terri and his children. My heart goes out to them.
