My automatic response was to say it's because people are ignorant of the lifestyle. Not to say stupid, but just.....don't know about it, and then i realized that was what your question was...lol...sorry, long day.

As the L in the lgbt, I think it's because people have the notion that we are sooo much different. It's hard for a lot of folks in the straight community to understand that we are not an entirely different species. We are human beings, and we love. We just (if we're lesbian and gay) happen to love the same sex. We feel romantic and sexual feelings for persons of the same sex. Bisexual people feel those things for both sexes...now that doesn't mean that they are any more promiscuous than any one else. Trans folks are people of one sex who should have been born the other. But when it all comes down to it, we're human beings. We love, we laugh, we poop....just like anyone else, at the heart of the matter.

I think that people misunderstand us because they are afraid of us. Instead of trying to understand, they hide behind hate and religion. Which isn't to say religion is a bad thing, it's not. It's just that a lot of religions are rooted in fear.

That's about as clear as I can get right now. We are misunderstood out of fear and that fear leads to willful ignorance. It's much easier to hate, revile and vilify that which you refuse to understand.

Maybe because they use George W Bush dressed as a Superman clad chimp?

Sorry, I couldn't resist, but I do not fully understand it since I do not live it. One of my good friends is gay and coming to terms with that is still something I work on, but I have always accepted him and his choice/compulsion/lifestyle as something that doesn't really matter to our relationship, anymore than my being overwieght or having psoriasis.

If you could explain it to me, that would be great, but I think lifestyle choices and situations are individual, just as they are for any person.

Because most people have or have had feelings along these lines in their lives and these wonderful religions we have say that it's a bad thing. Pass the effects of this along via media and you create hatred and misunderstanding. LGBT's are portrayed a sex-hungry beasties who are in opposition to anything pure and holy and why question when this portrayal comes from such "reputable" sources. Religion & media are powerful things.

For everyone else who doens't know how to look up acronyms on the internet:
Lesbian / Gay / Bi-Sexaul / Trans-gender

It is misunderstood because those lifestyles are queer - in all senses of the word. It is different - and people don't like different.

Gotta ya - took me a minute to figure it out. It is so foreign to most people and hated by the rest that there is no way for them to understand. It takes maturity and meeting people in all areas of life to appreciate the differences. Of course the fundamentalist will never understand. So be it.

because people believe being straight is the way "it shoud be". So at the same time, they group LGBT people into a stereotype and never actually care to understand the culture surounding it

I don't think a lot of people try to understand it. They are just set in their own ways and beliefs and aren't open to the fact that everyone doesn't have the same views and way of life as they do.

It's misunderstood because people don't want to understand it. They would rather people lead unhappy, unfullfilled, false lives, just to conform to society's rules, than even TRY to consider something different.

Through ignorance and not taking the blinkers off and accepting people for what they are and for what they believe in, people have a right to choose their own path in life and no one has the right to do them down for it.
