There are a lot of things to remember of a person, whose work has honored him personally, his family and his country.
Although this question has been answered by the previous answerers, I thought that it is important also the number of answers and I'm giving you my input.
He was one of the most known persons who studied and presented the wild animals' life of his country to the public and he had worked for the protection of nature. From the Australian zoo, has been caracterized in a recent posting as " a beloved friend and respected leader".
He had a multilevel contribution to the humanity. One of these aspects, was to make better known - to the general public - the wild animal life. Knowledge brings respect and in my opinion this is the major contribution to nature's conservation.
Too much enthusiastic and too much risky, as this job (often) requires.

A human being who had great charisma and reached out to all audiences (adults and kids). He was the best of his kind and he put his heart and soul into his work. He died the best way he possibly could, which is doing what he loved (sadly). He will be remembered by me as a great warrior and an animal at heart. May he rest in peace. I'm saddened for his family and the world has lost another good person.

Steve took Austrlia Zoo from a small place no one had heard of, to a top notch public national zoo and made it very popular...
His face can be seen on a sign upon arrival at the zoo...
He was also a wildlife conservationist and loved all animals and he would protect animals and keep them safe in their natural habitat...
He explored all possible lands to be able to show us up close and personal all the animals he had encountered..
He did indeed take his life in his hands, but who among us could ever do that for so many...
He was enthusiastic at his job and he cared deeply for his animals and family...
I have no idea how we will replace him or if we can...

probably the greatest conservationist and educator about wildlife that we have ever known. There will be a lot of imitators, but there is and always will be the original and the best.
We will miss you Steve, and know that the work you did will never go away, it will continue. You are a true legend.
He used to say: If something ever happens to me, people are gonna be like 'we knew a croc would get him!
Godspeed Steve

His environmentalism, his curious, childlike behavior, his enthusiasm for life, his accent, his passion for animals and his cause, his fatherly love. A great man. It's so sad to him gone. May his kids someday follow in his footsteps. The world needs more people like Steve Irwin. :-)

I will remember his wide eyed enthusiasm that he put into everything he did. He had a passion for life and a passion for the things of nature in this world. You could not help but listen to what he had to say. I am truly sorry for his wife and children's loss.

The picture you are using as your avatar says it all. He did have a passion for life-not only his own, but for ALL life. He taught the world so much, taught us that even that which we fear has a right to live, and he taught us that sometimes risks have to be taken if you stand for what you believe in. Some would say world has lost one of it's brightest sparks, but I choose to believe that his spark can light a blaze.

I will always remember him as a man that has a heart for animals. I always thought it was so cool how he caught crocodiles and it was very sad for me to hear that he got stinged by a sting ray. I will always remember him as a nice and kind man.
