That's a good question. I like sherlock holmes, but definitely the stories weren't written to be high art- I would say because the character himself was so innovative and has so clearly influenced the common view on what makes a good detective, and a good detective story.

Yes, Sherlock Holmes is surely a classic. Why? Because there were some murder mysteries before Sherlock Holmes, but the genre was born when Arthur Conan Doyle published his first story in 1887. These stories inspired all the future writers of murder-mystery, that's why they're classics. Besides, I think all famous (and still re-published and often-read) books from more than a century back ar considered classics.

well there are a million ways to define literature, that would be the short and useless answer.

i think what makes the SH series so important is 1. it was immensely popular at the time it was written and 2. it was the beginning of "scientific literature". That is, SH operated according to logic and deduction, a scientific process. this is very much reflective of the age in which he wrote (19th century england) and the notion that science--rather than religion or mysticism--was the way to arrive at the truth.

also consider the powerful effect that the SH series had on other literature, and the genre of detective novels in particular.

so to sum it up:

1. enormous popularity
2. it captured something of the spirit of the age (which is why it was so popular, i imagine)
and
3. it had a tremendous influence on later writers in the genre.

hope this helps.
