There's a few free ones out there, but you've just got to look at little bit.
MapleStory was mentioned, and it's not such a bad little game. A bit cartoon-ish, but it's solid and has quite a large community.
Another one you might want to try is Knight Online. I did have a little trouble getting onto a server with this game, but once there, it wasn't too bad at all.
There's also Silkroad Online. Unfortunately, I didn't find this one all that appealing, but others do enjoy it. It takes place in ancient China/Europe, and deals mainly with trade.
A popular one (around here, anyway) seems to be Runescape. I can't say that I was all that impressed with it, but who knows; you might enjoy it. It's browser-based, so you don't have to download any client.
You can also play Ragnarok Online using free servers. Some servers have their own clients, while others have you download several different things in order to connect to them. One server I recommend is Clownphobia's RO, although I'm sure you can use Google to find others that might interest you.

lol, how about maple story, it might now be as deep as the other games, but it is really fun.
