It depends on weather you mean at the time of their work or after - often, over time, what was controversial becomes mainstream (Such as the Beat writers), also it depends on weather you mean controversial because their work was challenging or because there was a real question of whether it was any good.
The Birth of a Nation is still very controversial movie because it is very racist, yet some consider it a movie masterpiece by D.W. Griffith.
Mapplethorpe had people in Cincinnati all in a lather over some photos.
When it was released, the Beatles White Album was controversial.

Claude Monet and all of the French Impressionists..they weren't allowed to exhibit their work in the Grande Salon..a sort of state sanctioned annual art exhibit..their works were all rejected as too controversial.
