West Africa is a place that saw many great black African civilizations.

Nok, Yourba and Ife

Out of all the many different black ethnic groups in Africa the best known is that of the Yoruba. The ancestors of the Yoruba were resonsible for the Nok civilization famous for their art work. Nok civilization appeared in Nigeria around 1000 B.C. and mysteriously vanished in the late first millennium A.D.perhaps because of disease or famine. The Yoruba would then go to build cities such as Ife and Benin and other kindoms all of which where in place prior to european arival they would also be famous for their art.

The empires

West African is also the birth place of another three great black civilizations. The Ghana Empire, Mali Empire and the Songhai empire were all in exisiance prior to european arival. One king of Mali (Mansa Musa) passed through Cairo in July of 1324, he was accompanied by five hundred slaves, each reportedly carrying a six-pound staff of gold. He gave out so much gold that it took 12 years for the economy to recover, due to the rapid inflation that it initiated.
