Of course not ! My son reads it - with some help for difficult words -. It is a magical way to get beyond the daily life on the planet. (But we are still at the first book mind you !!)
It is all good versus bad, evil versus god and the power of the mind which has been forgotten and still cannot be explained properly by science.......Science has its limits.....maybe in 20, 50. 100 years.........
Will have to think better about that one. Will come back later.
PS: kids always have a vivid imagination. For so many years before, they always read legends, popular stories (Cinderella...Snow White. The brother Grimms etc.....which actually have a deeper meaning behind them)
Kids have that sense of open-mindedness and wonderment about the world (why make them believe in Santa Claus and Easter Bunny then ,???). Adults try to prolong their innocence -for some a wee bit too long I think for some -. Real life will soon be confronted soon enough.
They are developing enquiring minds about matters which may not be exactly in the school curriculum.....but so what ?
They all seem to love it and might actually also to read more stuff and become more educated; better at spelling-) ??.
It teaches them not to take the points of view from adults - all adults which they tend to ideolise to some extent - for granted and as though God has spoken through mere mortals.
One thing I noticed though.....it kind of developed some self-esteem and they relate to characters in the stories which are young kids themselves.
Of course adults see different things and want to brainwash young minds and mold them to their own way of thinking.......See what happened to the brilliant books of Enyd Blyton ??:-)

No, I don't think that the future of society is doomed by Harry Potter. I'd say that if you did a little research through world history, an appalling amount of death and destruction has been done in the name of religion. Christians that believe that the Harry Potter books are evil and harmful to children haven't read them. I'm not impressed by the Pope's views. I think he is wrong on this issue and other far more important ones. I've found the books to be wonderfully entertaining and full of positive messages that I was happy to share with my son.

I'm not a kid, but I've always been warped. Harry Potter is a just a good book, not a how-to guide to the dark side. :-P

We have always needed the magic that these stories can provide. The Harry Potter saga contains many of the archetypes illustrated in Mythology throughout the ages (and that includes Christain Myth!). The Vatican says HP is untrue and evil; i say takes one to know one. ;P

How are the books evil? Have you read them? I don't think they are going to influence kids to fly around on broomsticks, if that's what you are afraid of.

Harry Potter is about witchcraft. Many people will say that it is harmless, but there is no such thing as good evil.
