It's not about the ammount of viruses compared to what you want to use.
The Apple Macintosh is a smaller percentage of the computing world in the past becauise it was built on a seperate hardware core, so it wasn't as popular with people who like to build their own computers.
So by default Microsoft sold it's OS to IBM which used generic hardware, and in the process allowed others to build their own computers for far less money. Thus software manufacuters wrote software for the majority of what people had in their homes, and virus writes and spyware writers saw an exploit they wrote for what was the more available platform WINDOWS.
But now that Apple has switched from the Power PC CPU's to the Intel CPU's and has started the bigger ad compaigns to sell more computers (and with the advent of BOOTCAMP to install windows XP on your MAC) more and more people are switching to the Mac, for less viruses and more compatabilaty and reliabilaty. Thus as you've seen before whatever is the more popular platform that is where the viruses and spyware are going to migrate to.
The Mac is still the safest to use to save yourself from virus attacks but soon a lot more people will be using it and Apple has already done more securety fixes in the last year then it has in the past 10 years on the Power PC chipset.
So I suggest you go with what you can afford to get, and what you feel most comfy using, The Mac takes a little bit of time to get used to but it's more powerful, and is way more expensive.
I am getting a Mac as my next LapTop because of the Security and the fact that I will be able to install Windows on top of the Mac OS and have two computers in 1.
Hope this helps

I will admit that I use LimeWire to get songs, Newsgroups to get software, and bit-torrent to get movies and tv shows. I will also tell you that in 2 years of downloading nearly every piece of software I use and half of all the music I have, I can honestly say I have no viruses. Once a year I run Norton, on my computer's birthday. This is year 2, and we are still clean. There isn't even a spyware removal tool for the Mac because there isn't any spyware out there.
As for your PC, I can't really help you there. Your best bets are to pay for LimeWire because the free version has its own spyware and the paid version doesn't. Same with any other p2p sharing utility on the PC. As for junk removal, buy SpySweeper ($20 or so at BJ's or Best Buy), it's the best out there. Free utilities are Spybot - Search & Destroy and Ad-aware. You will need both as they deal with separate things. You will also need Norton AntiVirus. It is the gold standard for virus removal. MacAfee also works well. You can only get one, however, or they will conflict with each other. And you will have to re-subscribe (ie pay) for a new license/subscription once a year or your virus definitions will be out of date and your computer will be vulnerable to viruses.

Mac = 0 viruses... because of the permissions system. You may download them, but they can't run.
Windoze= 11,000,000 instances of malware and counting!!!
I'm happily typing away on a Mac that has no anti-virus, no anti-spayware... and doesn't need it!!! Heh Heh Heh!
That is why I install only Macs at the school where I work.

There are not many viruses for mac, mainly because there are less people with macs, so the virus makers target PCs.
