because when you smile your eyes squint and it may look like they are closed (if you're asian or have small eyes). i have a korean friend and her eyes are so small you can never tell if they're open or not lmao.

Maybe because Japanese people already have slightly squinty eyes, and when they smile really big, they just close their eyes. That's a really good question. I've never thought of that before.

Why does a giant drop of sweat appear on the side of their heads when they're embarassed?

It's just something that's developed in Japanese culture over the years that we don't really understand I guess.

they dont alwasy do that but its become one of those stereotypical actions. Either they close em because the eyes show alot of the characters emotions or their eyes will be open and all sparkly.

They don't necessarily close their eyes. I think that their small eyes get covered with their cheekbones. ^-^
