its from Napoleon Bonaparte (a french general). Its a war tactic. He used to have a smaller army but he would "divide and conquer." and would win many battles. He would cut through the middle and divide large armies into 2 and therefore weakening the army

I don't know the origin, but that is a historically accurate path to success.

The Bush administration is currently practicing that idea. They have America dividing 50/50.

The key to political dominance is to shake the public belief system. There is no room for "fence walkers" under an aggressive administration. You are either with them or against them. They make us feel guilty for not taking a side.

The downside to such a circumstance: we end up destroying ourselves instead of those we intend conquer. It's a cyclical process.

When a nation is too strong to defeat in a war, you see if you can get the nation to divide over some issue. Then you fan the flames of anger, and if civil war breaks out and divides that nation, then it is now ripe to be conquered when before it was not. That is an example of divide and conquer. Get the enemy to battle among themselves and they become easy to conquer.

Definition: Solve a problem, either directly because solving that instance is easy (typically, because the instance is small) or by dividing it into two or more smaller instances. Each of these smaller instances is recursively solved, and the solutions are combined to produce a solution for the original instance.

Does that help you to understand the meaning ?

Simply, it is easier to take out a few smaller parts that to try to attack the whole. In military terms, if you are able to make a few of the soldiers break apart from the regiment, you can defeat that small part easily. Keep doing this until the big part is small enough to take on with ease.

In war, as in most aspects of life it is easier to take control of a situation if your enemies are figthing between them. It is not an advice to create war arround the world but it is an advice to take advantage of the disputes of your competitors.
