However, I have a cat. Any suggestions about dealing with both? I do not intend for my rat to be eaten or threatened. I do have a spare bedroom to put the cage in at night. Help me please. I loves little ratties, they can be so sweet and funny.

Rats make great pets and they don't smell as much as mice. I lived in a flat with 8 pet rats and 4 cats. We had no problems. Just make sure the cage is secure and the cats are locked out of the room if you pull the rats out of the cage.

Little ratties grow in to big a** rats if loved and cared for properly. I personally just don't understand the appeal of caged or tanked pets. A pet rat would surely be a pet for the cat, for while you are away all day, that cat will be thinking about getting that rat - like Sylvester and Tweety - and you will constantly be forced to choose between which one you want to spend time with. My advice is get yourself another cat and ask your science teacher if you can get a rat for the class to take care of or keep the rat as a pet at the office or even a friend's house if you can.

Peace!

I had 3 pet rats and only had a problem with my fawn colored rat who was an escape artist. As long as you keep the rats cage clean with plenty of entertainment in there for them, clean water and fresh food, they wont think about ever leaving their humble abode.

I dont think you will have big problems. when really little the cat may chase the rat. but as it gets to adult size, unless an experienced 'ratter' it is unlikely to be really interested in trying to kill and eat it.
