I am a mother and shower with my 7-yr old daughter on occasion....and don't hide anything in every day life with her...(i.e., putting lotion on etc.).... do you consider this sick or innappropriate? My good friend (a guy friend) just said that adult nakedness should be separate from child nakedness and that it isn't right that I do that. I don't want to have to hide being naked, and make my daughter think that we should have to hide our bodies or be ashamed of them....to a very strict degree. Yes, opposite sex children, completely agree... but... I don't feel this is wrong in any way....you?

Agreed. I'd do it until SHE gets uncomfortable. She'll let you know. But I agree with you.

I think you should be open and comfortable until your child feels uncomfortable. My mom was always very open, I never became uncomfortable with that, and I am open with my kids. However there came a point when my brother was uncomfortable in early adolescence. I expect about the same from my kids as I also have a boy and girl. Although I plan to take it how it comes. As long as your kids are ok with it, there is no reason to hide yourself or you may give off a negative self image. Openness any any similar sense will also help in future conversations about birds and bees and keep the lines of communication open and honest.

I think you're right, up to a point... the question "would you shower naked with your mother" raises that point: there's an age after which it's not OK. It's like having her sleep in your bed: okay at early ages, not okay as a teenager. The nudity will probably stop being okay soon (age 8ish); sleeping in the bed, maybe a little later (9-10ish?). In both cases, you're at the extreme high end of the scale; I think the last time I was naked with my dad was about age 4 and the last time I was in my parents' bed was about age 8.

In Europe it is not uncommon for whole families to vacation at nude beaches and such. Here in the United States nudist families live and vacation naked. In other less-developed cultures families often see each other naked. Studies have shown that the children growing up in these environments are more comfortable with their bodies and others. America's body phobia is neither universal not healthy. It all depends on how you portray your nudity.

No not at all. I don't think it's wrong for opposite sex children either especially when they're young. I believe that if kids already know what the human body looks like and it's no mystery, they're less likely to become promiscuous at an early age because they won't be curious.

Well....this is a sensitive subject. And it should be proceeded with caution. I say all this with respect to the parent child relationship.
I am a Husband and father to my 3 boys. I do not think my boys should see my wife (their mother) nude. They need to respect their mother like they will be taught to respect their future wife.
Having said that, My boys and I shower when we go to the gym. We sit in a hot tub in the gym. We are men/menchildren and I am not ashamed of my body or showering with them...

Here is where it gets sensitive.

My oldest is 12 and he is hyper conscience of everything...I give him his privacy and respect.

So, in essence; To each is own and never listen to people who's opinion is is devoid of facts and is personal. You are not sick..

My 2 cents.

I think it is alright

I am very open about sexual discussions with my parents - both my mother and father. All my friends wish that they could be open with my parents about it. I found that by talking to my parents - I learnt more from them than school and friends

I think what you are doing is fine. If she learns about sexuality from you is FAR better than from friends - god knows where they learned it.

If she sees her mother comfortable in her own skin - she will have the same mind set - just make sure she can tell the difference between promiscuous and comfortably. Plus she;ll let you know when she doesn't want to do that anymore

No, there is nothing wrong with being naked in front same sex children, especially little girls as curious as they are. They have to know that when they get older there bodies will have the same things as ours. My mom was the same way with me and I think I turned out just fine.

Well I have a daughter and she is 13yrs old now. I have never showered with her or showed nakeness to her. I think its respect first to her and yes she dont have to hide being naked to herself. I know you all have the same sex but how would you feel if she went over a friends house and choose to do that same thing with another female and her parents found that to be inappropiate and asked you to come pick her up, or the friends father just happen to see her changing clothes and thought he would help himself to her. We are trying to get rid of child preditors so please please please do not do that. I know that is your child but I agree with your friend guy that is very disrespectful to your daughter.

I would stop at a point though maybe now. She is getting to old to be showering with her Mom. It is not sick or twisted you can do a lot of bonding at that time but there comes a time when your daughter is to old to shower with you and the time is now.

I don't see anything sick or inappropriate about it. It the child is uncomfortable with it then it should stop but otherwise there's nothing wrong.
