I have a snake, a python, who is getting along in years, so I have thought to make her into a belt. When I suggested this, my son cried. How can I explain to him that having her for a belt would keep her around forever? Have any of you done anything similar to this?

I was at the vets and there was a kiddy with an injured rabbit. It didn't look good for the bunny, I guess, because his mother turned to the little guy and said "we can always ask the vet to cut off one of his feet for a souvenir" . The kid started crying even harder. Too, my Grandmas chicken was eaten for Sunday dinner and she was traumatized for the rest of her life. She loved chicken but she loved that one differently.
If someone is very attached to something it's hard to see it stuffed or re-used after death. It would be an interesting thing to do to another snake but not one that he has memories of. Funny how that works.

How heartless, when you die why doesnt your son skin you and make you into a belt, you are a monster! I am so glad you are not my mom, bit ch. Bury him in the garden with a marker like normal people do. And the word you are looking for is poacher not a mother. How horrible and I feel so sorry for the snake to be disrespected like that after so many years of giving you her love and respect. Again, you are a MONSTER! Your son should stuff you and make you into a coffee table so you can be around forever.

Yep, we had an ole coon dog name Bert. Dog was a real good one, family loved it. One day the UPS truck was coming down the street, and you guessed it ran right over ole Bert. So what we did was take him to a friend of mine does a little taxidermy work on the side...kind of a hobby. We had him stuffed and made into a piece of furniture and put in our living room. He really is a conversation piece for visitors and we still feel he is part of the family.

I've kept a couple turtle shells, but I have no idea how you could convince your son that this is a good idea.

Change species. Would you skin your beloved dog and make mittens of it? Isn't it about the same thing?

I dunno- preserving it as a mount or skeleton is one thing- as clothing seems a bit more odd to me.

I have not done anything like this, but a friend of mine made a headband out of his late fathers foreskin.
I know it sounds tacky but it was the eighties and headbands were big.
