I am not a genious in school, and certainly not a math wiz. I took Honors Biology and Anatomy in school, and Now I Am A Senior! I want to take AP Biology, but my guidence councellor says against it because im not classified with the high acheiving kids in my class. Tommorow is my first day of my senior year, and i want to change my schedule to take AP Bio, Should I? Should I go with logic or follow my instincs?

It will be tough....believe me....I teach college biology.....if you feel you can handle it, go for it if guidance allows schedule changes the first day for your reason. The guidance person may know you and your background thru teacher buzz, so they may not feel you will be a success or know who is in the class.

Biology is unlike math in that it's more memorization & understanding of concepts than calculations. So if you work hard at it you should do fine.

If you already passed Honours Biology & Anatomy with a good grade, then it shouldn't take a genius to do AP Biology. Having had a lower level chemistry class may help a little, though probably not that much.

As you probably already know, a good enough mark in AP Biology would get you a free 1st year university biology credit. Well, I did all my biology homework for my last year of high school, and found first year university biology to be very much a review. So I don't think AP Biology would be much different from a regular class.

I say go with your own instincts. You know yourself & your potential better than any guidance counsellor.

If it feels right... do it. Sometimes we need to believe in ourselves and the things we can do rather then listening to others. If we don't take a chance on certain things we'll never know if we could have done it or not. Here is some food for thought. I have a friend of mine who had a bit of hard time in high school with some subjects. One of her teachers (math teacher) told her to drop out, that she would never make it. If she would have listened to him she would have never gotten her "Masters in Early Childhood Education." Personally, I say go for AP Bio. Whatever choice you make will be the right on. Good luck and have a good first day back at school!

If you are planning on going to college, my opinion is that you should, without a doubt, take AP Biology. Every credit you can knock out of college during high school is well worth the effort. It also gives you a chance to fail without it going on your college record.
If you start to feel like you're going to fail, then get your official transcripts sent from your highschool to your college(s) before they post the semester grades and college admissions will never know you failed. If you do well and you didn't have stellar grades, you can submit transcripts with the grade on them and it will help you get in to college.
If you don't decide to take AP Bio, don't waste your senior year with a different biology class.

I have a master's degree in biology. If Biology is something you really like, which it sounds like you do, I say go for it. Be prepared to study hard and dedicate the necessary amount of time. A trick I learned in college is that you should study 2 hours for every hour you are in class. Good Luck!

See if you can do what I did. I'm a freshman at a university and I switched my math class to a higher class but I was able to get a fall back option if the class were too hard and that way I'm guarenteed a seat in the previous class if this one kills me.

Take what you want to take and ignore your advisor. Then get a study guide, a tutor, whatever it takes, and study very hard so you can show them all that they were wrong. Advanced biology is not easy, but nothing worth doing is easy. Go for it, and kick their butts. Best wishes.
