the krauts got it right because their autobahns are wider, and our drivers are bloody dangerous. im driving along, middle lane doing aroundahreighty fivemmmpphh. dry clear road.no cars in front...and dick in his BMW overtakes me at around plus 30mph, and the foolish person changed lane n front of me...at well over 120..and he almost lost it... watching the car in front begin to go sideways isnt what you want at 80 mile an hour...

the same attitude prevails in cities..its a traffic light grand prix, my ford Ka is faster than your nova...for gods sake, race by all means, but why do it in inner cities, wher someone half a mile up the road is reversing a transit out of their driveway..and suddenly the road is full of dead innocents, mums and prams. (i ws a boy racer back in the late 70's and thru the 80's..on a motorbike)

boriing facts and figure. 60mph=88feet per second, 120mph is 166FPS, and 180 is 240FPS or 1000 feet, thats one fifth of a mile, is six seconds away at 120mph, and i dont care what you say, even with abs, you wont see the transit, or teh mum pushing the pram crossing the road until your say, 300 feet away, one second to think, and get off the gas and on the brakes...and that leaves two seconds...and you need 400 feet...maybe your car will stop faster, my volvo would...but not in two seconds... our roads are so congested its quite rightly death by dangerous driving..and you should go to jail, and be banned for life...

but. that isnt going to happen anytime soon. and everyone has high powered cars for a reason, even me. we like to drive, and we like to drive quickly, and at time we like a good dose of adrenaline, and the roads are not the place to do it. so, i have a suggestion;

we have lots of relatively unused motorways, for example the M45 J17 of the M1. historically, its where jaguar roadtested teh XJS. (the motorway was close for resurfacing) its around 11 miles long, and has a nice bend or two, and its only a feeder into south coventry, most folks use the M1/M6 interchange and get off at J2 or 3, so its almost empty, and closing it wouldnt cause a problem for other traffic. and the highways agency, and the police, let you go, for a fee of course! 11 miles, as fast as you like, sign your waivers, take out BUPA, and go not racing, but very quickly in one direction... but, theres always a but, once you leave the motorway, and should you go down the A45 into coventry, be warned, its loaded with gatso cameras. theoretically you could loose your licence in 5 miles its got so many. one is at the bottom of a long hill, and obscured by a 4meter sign for island ahead.... its been awarded 3 gold rings its generated so much revenue..safety my bit i sit on.

but, they do it at the nurburgring, and yes there are accidents, and people die, but no one is an innocent bystander, racing accidents happen, but in a controlled observed environment, with the correct emergency services, what a money spinner... 20 quid well spent for a sundays entertainment... and they'd turn up in their hundreds... we live to compete, in teh correct arena it can be spectacular, on the streets its spectacularly dangerous. which is probably why ive got a 200bhp Volvo..

The problem with motorway driving is old fools going too slow and not knowing where they are going.

The quickest way home for me is by going 1 junction along the motorway.

2 days ago I got stuck behind a car doing 30 down the slip road, they pulled into the middle lane doing 30 and stayed there.

I drove quickly past to get away from the impending accident and noticed an old biddy behind the wheel and after passing I noticed that she only had sidelights on at 10:30pm.

After a few hundred yards I could no longer see her car, but I could see the other cars swerving to avoid this idiot and hear the occasional horn.

With a higher speed limit a truck might have ploughed that idiot off the road and rid the world of a dangerously stupid driver.

I think the limit should be raised to 80.I think one of the major problems is drivers driving to slow.I use the m1 every day and the amount of times i see artics having to pull into centre lane to overtake a slow driven car is unbelievable. If these drivers are afraid of the motorway speed they should keep off. After all that is what the motorways are for, high speed driving.

I wish major roadways would be split & speed limits raised!

I believe slow, fearful interstate drivers are as much of a hazzard on an interstate as the speed deamons are. Therefore make everyone happy & separate interstates monitored by highway patrol according to driving preferences... I'm so fed up with getting caught behind Grandma Bertha in her Buick going 20miles below the speed limit in the 'fast lane'!!!!

What real difference would increased limits make anyway? Around here, many drivers ignore them completely on all roads, not just motorways. Personally, I dont think increasing/decreasing the limits will save more lives or cause more deaths.

No speed limit? aaaa ha ha ha ha ha ha!
The 'clever' germans have no limit on the autobahn BUT they also have Air Ambulances JUST for that road! It has the highest death toll in the entire world! It has the highest Serious and multiple injury rate from road traffic accidents in the world! If you want to take your vehicle to 'the limit' please do so at a track or use the Autobahn in Germany yourself. If you survive then hopefully the experience will cure you from madness, if not - well its one less nutcase threatening the lives of careful drivers everywhere

. . . though the less fortunate on here may not realize it - it was the Germans who invented the Motorway or Interstate by building the first autobahns in Europe (I won't mention Hitler) and yes, they basically got it right as we've all copied the idea except for the various international speed limits . . .

Keeping to the inside lane is the answer.
Lorries should not be able to pull out from the inside lane during peak periods.
Problem solved.
Higher speeds are not the answer.
Drivers learning anticipation is.
During peak periods, slower speeds reduce congestion, as do keeping your distance and not braking.
TRY IT OUT !

personally, i think that there should be a coast to coast autobahn built here in the states. i think it should be straight as an arrow and be a toll road. i think the tolls should pay for its upkeep. i don't think there should be any speed limits on it--however i would like to see a minimum speed of at least 55mph.

the tolls will keep the goobers off of it. the 55mph minimum speed would keep gramma and grandpa off of it.

then the rest of us could get on it and fly. truckers would love it. cafe racers would love it. touring bikes would love it. sportscars would love it. and people like me who don't drive anything exotic, but still like to go fast would love it.

let's build it!
