The first flags were used to assist military coordination on battlefields. It then evolved into an identification tool. I mean imagine not having the German flag on the side of a plane in the 'Battle of Britain' we wouldn't know who to shoot down!

burning. alternately, it can make a tolerable blanket, in a pinch, if you don't mind the colour scheme. one could wear it as a sari, i suppose... or rig a sail from one (though i wouldn't do it on the tigris)...
