I was told that it is not my problem since I do pay rent. Is this true. It's hotter than hell and I can't really afford to fix it.

This is a large 3 story complex that has airconditioning and washers and dryers provided. I didn't not bring anything with me except my furniture. All I did was leave for work yesterday and came home to a hot apt. The fan blows but not cold. I didn't do it but I don't want to call the office until I know they can't screw me.

depends if you broke it, or it broke by itself...if it broke by itself, its not yours, if you busted, then, yes, you have to pay

Check your rental agreement, if you have one. What does it say?

However PROBABLY NOT. I'd call the landlord up and ask for him/her to come over and check this out, since it is so hot you can;t stand it.

The worst case scenario is that he.she will tell you to go ahead, buy a new one and take it off your rent...great unless you have already paid your rent for September. You CAN tell he/her that you can't afford to do so.

I have rentals and am continually getting calls like this..the a/c, the plumbing and the windows are common things that break down. I usually replace things witthin 24 hours OR as soon as I can get a pro out to fix things.

As long as the air conditioning unit was provided with the apartment then it is not the tenants responsibility to replace/repair the unit when it breaks. I would contact your landlord ASAP and let him/her know about the situation so that it can be taken care of. You can also look up your renter's rights online. type in "renter's rights" and the state you live in at any search engine and you'll be able to read in detail what your rights are as a tenant and what the expectations of a landlord are. Hope this helps.

First question: Was the air conditioner already there when you moved into the apartment? If so, then NO you don't have to fix it yourself. That's your landlord's responsibility.

Second question: Did you bring the air conditioner with you when you moved into the apartment? If so, then YES it is your responsibility to get it fixed.

I am renting my home that I live in now, and if ANYTHING in this house messes up, then my landlord has to come and fix it unless it belongs to me.

For example: If my washer and dryer breaks down, then that is my responsibility b'cus it belongs to me (I purchased it, it's mine). However, if my air conditioner breaks down, then my landlord HAS to come and fix it! I hope that you are understanding this...Let me know if I helped you! AL~

Depending on what area of the country you live in. I would have called maintenance and had them come out last night. For sure come out today. They have personal on-call for stuff like that. And NO, Your a/c belongs to the apartment complex and is their responsibility to keep it running to make you happy according to your lease.

They cant "screw you"...

Its thier responsibility, as its permenantly attached to the building.

There is nothing you did, the unit has probably been there a long time, and its finally run out of freon. They will either replace it, or get it charged, at no cost to you.

I wish you well..

Check the breaker and reset it (for the compressor). Check if the unit is frozen on the copper line into the condensor.

read your lease. surely it's in there. Generally speaking, no, you won't be. Maintenance is the responsibility of management.
