Lincoln told the South they could keep their slaves if they would just stay in the union. So don't go saying he was about freeing the slaves.

Because they have been indoctrinated with US public school propaganda. Lincoln's plan was to send all black people back to Africa, I kid you not.

Yeah, whatever man. The big issue was the moral standing of slavery compared to that of other nations. Lincoln didn't care about the men he sought to free as much as he cared about the coming judgement of other nations.
States joined the Confederacy for lots of reasons and slavery was one but the war wasn't just over that. Most of the states would not have even blinked an eye if Lincoln hadn't pulled the stunt with Fort Sumter but that fueled an already boiling situation.
Lincoln offered different terms which would allow the South to maintain slavery and the South didn't bite.
Most of the people who fought in the conflict on both sides didn't even own a slave one. Lincoln didn't handle the situation right and pushed the envelope. The info the last guy has is right but mixed in places. Bottom line is he came down to the point of the stereotype of the South was evil.
Everyone back then didn't have much of a moral backbone and there is no reason to put blame on any one side. After all, civil rights did not happen the day after the war stopped. The slaves were freed, but then given little rights to protect themselves. They resorted to working for next to nothing to keep homes and a way of life. People who have this big belief that the South held down anyone is way stupid. America let the institution root itself into its system as long as the nation was new and growing. America let the civil rights of people go unchecked for almost a hundred years plus after the fact of the Civil War. America moved native people off land for the profit and rights there of. America was built on free and cheap labor and the north was more than willing to let it happen.
. Men didn't march in bare feet to fight for slaves they didn't own. They marched for the fact an army was invading thier land.
Lincoln did some great things, but people are blind and blame a nation that lived for five years. The south is no worse than any other state past or present. As far as the governments go back then either blame both sides or none at all. The South was no more evil than the Union.

Lincoln participated in many debates while running for senate. In those debates, he condemned slavery and called for abolition. When he was elected President, the south knew what was coming. The rest of the country had sickened of slavery.
As President, Lincoln was trying to keep the union together. When the Missouri Compromise failed, and moral Americans refused to allow any more slave states to join the union, the southern states left. Lincoln wanted the country to stay together because he believed we were the best hope for mankind, and that united we'd be better. However, he tested the south by sending that American war ship to South Carolina and they made their intentions clear.
Also, very important to remember that each of the southern states which seceded wrote secession documents and each specifically said that the state was leaving because they wanted to retain slavery. In fact, Mississippi said the north was outrageous, trying to deprive them of their means of earning a living, because 'everyone knows' that whites can't work in the hot Mississippi sun. Why would these states have felt they were being deprived of the rights to their slaves if Lincoln wasn't about ending slavery?
Because an avowed abolitionist was President and they could read the writing on the wall. Too bad they could not look in the mirror and see what repugnant evil thugs they were. Then, they could have said - oh my god, what have i been doing? freed their slaves, and let our country realize the true meaning of its creed without all the bloodshed. But, noooooooo. And their descents still in large part refuse to look at themselves and try to 'celebrate' their 'heritage' of fighting for massah's right to enlave the darker guy.
