I think the best thing to do is a sit the other person down, look them in the eye, and voice your sincere apology. Anything more than that makes it seem like you're guilty and trying to make up for it.

If they have kids, he could take on chores or the kids without being asked. That's the best way my husband can be forgiven.
And a romantic night with candles, dinner and a foot rub helps too.

make an effort... like cook her a specialty dish, help her with her chores... get a dessert from the bakeshop and tell her sorry in the most sincere tone!
Oh.. give her puppy dog eyes too... most women love that!
