Time measurements are very old. Long before Imperial or Metric systems.

It was not the Eqyptians, but the Sumerians and later the Babylonians who first gave us the divisions of the day into hours and the divsion of hours into minutes (and later seconds).

Twelve signs of the Zodiac is the circle divided into 12 parts, but the "digit counting" on both hands gives us 12 + 12 (hours of day plus hours of night).

It all started with the Egyptians. They used a base 12 numbering system instead of our base 10 numbering system. This is because they counted based on the joints of their fingers (3 joints on each of the 4 fingers) whereas now we just count using 10 fingers. So the Egyptians divided their clock into 12 hours of daytime and 12 hours of nightime, and it's been that way ever since.
