All these wars going on in the world - people getting killed every single day - has any nation or person managed to develop shield technology - somethings in sci fi have been achieved in reality - what about this one - shields - if you could develop a technology that would repell the bullet or bomb then you wouldn't need to defend yourself by attacking someone before that can attack you ! Is it coming soon? Is it in development now? Because it can't come soon enough - to prevent all this carnage !

Assume an effective shield is developed.

This is not a very encouraging answer, but each time a "new" defense system is developed, it is closely followed by an offense system that renders it useless or ineffective.

For example, the mid evil suit of armor made going into battle with a sword and club pretty much useless - the end of feudal carnage? At least until the cross bow was developed which would send a lethal bolt clean through the metal shield. Ouch!

Large castle walls and moats? These led to the development of catapults and portable bridges.

Bunkers? Bunker buster bombs.

Tanks? Armor piercing bullets and anti tank mines.

Remote location with little or no easy access and a 360 degree of anyone approaching?
Enter the airplane.

It's a sad commentary, but I believe that an impenetrable defense system, irregardless of the complexity or technology involved, will always be followed by weapons that render it ineffective.

Sadly, Star Wars / Trek-style deflector shields do not currently exist. Generating a flat or curved plane of magnetism (or, more workably, charged plasma) large enough and strong enough to slow or repel a weapon would take an immense amount of power to maintain even for a few seconds.

Also, as one answerer has already stated, the arms race is always pitting the latest defensive and offensive technologies against each other - so shield-busting bombs or ceramic-cored bullets impervious to magnets wouldn't be far behind. You build a better mousetrap, sooner or later a better mouse will evolve...

Something like that may be possible in principle. There were once stories - granted they were stories on the internet - of ACCIDENTAL SHIELDS being created by electrostatic forces.

They seemed to involve a lot of ozone - either as a working component - or as a byproduct. In NO cases do I remember reading anything about bullets being stopped. But when PEOPLE walked into them - they felt like they were walking underwater - or through water. And THEN they reached a point where they were unable to continue walking at all.

The accidental shields that were created, seemed to involve large rolls of plastic sheets that were being manufactured in a factory. It was an "on again off again" effect - which means that nobody knew when to expect it - and that somehow had something to do with the humidity in the room. Nobody knew how it was created - or even WHEN it was going to be accidently created again - and so nobody was able to recreate the conditions.

This assumes of course, that the reports were true.

I remember reading about it on the internet, back in 1995. But ALSO? I keep an internet library - which is FILLED with things that I ran off on a printer somewhere. They are all articles that I'm interested in, or which caught my eye.

And I DO have the original articles about force fields on hand.

They are bound together in plastic, and kept in a notebook.

Why? Simple. BACKUP. Websites come and go. Even if the same website continues to exist, articles have a tendency to disappear. And THAT'S over a 6 month period. Do any of you imagine that this - or any other website - is still going to be around 10 or 20 or even 30 years from now? I didn't think so.

THAT'S why I know about accidental force fields - and you don't. :)))))

With every day pass, our country is getting into more and more trouble. The inflation, unemployment and falling value of dollar are the main concern for our Government but authorities are just sleeping, they don’t want to face the fact. Media is also involve in it, they are force to stop showing the real economic situation to the people. I start getting more concern about my future as well as my family after watching the response of our Government for the people that affected by hurricane Katrina.

According to recent studies made by World Bank, the coming crisis will be far worse than initially predicted. So if you're already preparing for the crisis (or haven't started yet) make sure you watch this video at http://www.familysurvival.tv and discover the 4 BIG issues you'll have to deal with when the crisis hits, and how to solve them fast (before the disaster strikes your town!) without spending $1,000s on overrated items and useless survival books.

it's a beautiful dream. but, it is difficult to create something small and portable that can have an effect on a bullet going over the speed of sound, let alone stop or return the bullet. although the technology is good the time the two would be is contact of a magnetic field before impact is about a millisecond.

Hi. Mu-metal can shield against magnetic pulse but would not act as a blast shield. Prevention is the only cure.

Electromagnetic shield technology exists, but not in "Enterprise Style". It is a material called Mµ-Metal.
