I'm thinking about being an art therapist, but aren't sure about it. I don't really want to do a double major. I double degree would not be the same, it's less credits - about 54 in art and 27 in psych. Would it still give me as many opportunities as having a double major? I'd appreciate advice on any of this.

It would probably be wise to do the double major Art & Psych, then continue with a Master's in Art Therapy. Check with your advisor, as many of the couses may count for both majors. I double majored in religion and psych . . . not intentionally. They were both my interests. It wasn't till my advisor suggested a couple of more courses and wow, a double degree. If I were you, I'd check into it soon, before you use up your electives. Good luck. Art Therapy is a growing field!!

If you are going to go to grad school after look at their requirements. You may be able to get an art degree and minor in psych but still have all the pre reqs to go to grad school. I did a double major in psych and business but a minor in either would have been easier;) and met the requirements for grad school.

For a quick dose of reality, try to market your skills NOW and see what responses you get. College insulates from reality, provides an awesome social life, but like the lead actor in the movie The Paper Chase, says (I forget his name), gives you "a mind full of mush." But since you're already in the thick of things, better to garner as many credentials as you can for your investment in time there. Work your butt off (relatively speaking, because you WILL later find that college was a picnic compared to making it in the real world) and get two degrees if at all possible, but then don't be disappointed if you never use either of them in your workplaces later. The average career lasts seven (7) years nowadays; the average job, twenty (20) months!! Eighty (80) percent of us college graduates are in that same boat. Our degrees are white elephants. The world is changing too fast for colleges to be of any use to 18-to-22-year-olds any more, except in specialized things like pre-Med. I majored in systems engineering a few years back, and never worked as a systems engineer a day in my life. Check the stats.

since your goal is to become a therapist, then my suggestion is to major in psychology and a minor in art. You do not need a major in art at all.
