Hey mate, he was 15 kms of away from port Douglas at 11.am australian time , filming scenes for his daughter bindis new show about wildlife,
Steve came near a stingray, as did the camera man, in 2 metre water, the stingray felt threatened so whipped its tail up with the sharp barb and unfortunately Steve was above him and it punctured his chest hitting his heart, The man filming while this happened, didn't know what had happened until he saw blood in the water, he managed to get Steve to the rubber dingy and take him 2 minutes to get back to the boat, where there was a medical team and crew, The doctor on-board tried furiously to revive him as the boat was taken to another port where they met a helicopter, unfortunately Steve had died ,
His best friend that was there says that Steve was in a peaceful state of mind and didn't feel any pain, The autopsy is being conducted in Cairns and his wife Terri children Bindi and bob are back at the zoo that Terri and Steve live on and take care off.
God bless his soul

He was stung by a stingray as he swam over it, which is usually extremely painful, but not fatal. However, this stingray's serrated tail hit between his ribs and entered his heart, thus puncturing his heart. This, plus the fact that its poison would spread more quickly, caused the accident to be fatal. He was filming a special on dangerous water animals near the Great Barrier Reef. They took him for help, but he didn't make it.

Yahoo! has articles on its news site about Steve.

BTW: I want to share my condolences with the world and Steve's family...He was the best thing to happen to the world of animal education in many years. His efforts were great and he will be missed. May Terri, Bindi Sue and Bob, as well as the rest of Steve's family, feel the love the world is sharing with them at this moment.

Hey SmileyCat,

Yes sadly this tragedy occurred Monday 11am approx Sydney time. Steve was filming a documentary off Port Douglas Queensland. News has come this morning that he was swimming about 2 metres above the Bull ray when as they swam into shallow water it turned suddenly in defence mode and it's tail flung up and the toxic barb pierced Steve's heart. He had no chance to turn away in the water. Australia is mourning the loss of a wonderfully committed human being, conservationist, husband and father. We are as a nation devastated at his passing and are totally committed to his wife Terri and their two beautiful children Bindi and Bob. I know people think he took risks and had it coming but believe me Steve carefully calculated and assessed the risks and situations he placed himself in.Reports from friends have the family absolutely devastated but at the precious age of 8 Bindi is said to be determined to carry on her fathers legacy.
Terri and Steve set up a wildlife conservation fund, where it is being asked donations be made in his memory. The link is
www.yahoo7.com.au/sunrise and is called Wildlife Warriors.Australians are extremely touched by the wishes of so many all over the world. It's such a sad situation that we are finding hard to put into words. We are still crying. Thanks for the kind words and thoughts.

EJ..andygurls daughter...and she says hello. Take care.

He was filming a TV show in Austrailia and was stung in the chest (or heart) by a stingray. They have a poisonous stinger (ten inches long) that comes from the back of their tail. They sting when they feel threatened. It was so tragic. He has two little kids too.

He was filming in Great Barrier Reef about dangerous sea creatures and a sting ray stung him. The barb went through his chest and put a hole in his heart. Real fluke because usually they don't get such a direct hit like that. Poor Steve. I always thought it would be a croc or snake that got him, but nope.

i will never forget the image of steve irwin talking to the camera while sharks were in a feeding frenzy all around him while he stood in the water...the guy was a crazy kook but he was fascinating, funny and very entertaining...i kind of felt one day his luck would run out the way he took risks dealing with wildlife but i would never have guessed it would take a stingray to be the culprit....my condolences to his friends and family....he was one of a kind and his legacy will continue as his shows run on animal planet
