Under English law you can defend yourself if you believe that are are in imminent danger of attack. This means that if someone is threatening you with a knife and you believe that he will use it then you can bash him on the head with the cricket bat that you just "happened" to be carrying. This is not the same as beating him to death - just enough to defend yourself. In other words you do not need to struck by the other party if you sincerely believe that you are about to be assaulted, but, be prepared to show that in court.

lol laughing at the common sense question that people seem to miss.Like how many times does Israel and America have to be attacked before we can call it self defense.Great question. You know you just hug that person and show them love and peace and they will stop hitting you..,or you throw your arm around their shoulder and say lets talk this out.Yeh right like thats gona happen.

OK, I agree with most people here. But here's another perspective:
"But I say to you, do not resist him who is evil; but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also.
And if anyone wants to sue you, take off your shirt, let him have your coat also.
And whoever shall force you to go one mile, go with him two...
You have heard that it was said 'you shall love your neighbor, and hate your enemy'.
But I say to you, love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you.
------------------
Personally, I don't practice this. But if any of you others claim to be Christians, I invite you to change your answer. I'd be a lot more impressed with the other things you have to say if you did so.

If someone hits me once, I'm going nail them back. That's self defense. If no one is around to see it, then how are the police going to know anyway?

0 times. All they have to do is come towards you in a fit of anger. Don't wait to get hit, you may not have the chance to defend yourself.

actually as long as they appear to be threatning u i don't think they have to hit u at all. u can hit them first and still have it be self defense as long as you can prove they were intending to harm u
