Hi, My grey gelding has lumps under his tail.( the skin around the tail bone ) I have been told that white and grey horses are suseptible to cancer and this may be a form of it.

is there any treatment for this? Or anyother explanation as to what it could be.

It doesn't seem to bother him. and he is in good condition.

I am sure your horse has melanoma. It is almost certain in grey horses. And it shows up as lumps under the tail of the horse.
Many times they do not bother the horse at all but sometimes they get big and you can have them removed.
Talk to your vet and see what he thinks and what you should do.

In a gray horse 99% chance it's melanoma. All gray horses will develop them, given enough time. Next time your vet comes out, make sure he looks at it. If it's not bothering your horse they will probably just leave it alone, but they'll want to keep an eye on it.

Need to have a biopsy and blood test to be done for your next step.

You found something you don't know what it is and not sure how to treat it due to that, then it is time for a vet check to determine what it is.

Gray and light colored horses are at high risk of cancer.

What I can tell you is that my white horse has had cancer but it was in his eye. The only thing I can tell you is to ask your vet or call a university that can take care of large animals.

It may be cancer, but it could also just be basically a fatty deposit. Check to see if it feels like it is attached or mobile under the skin. If it is attached you should call your vet, if it's not it is probably just a fatty tumor.

This sounds bad. Like Melanoma. You definitely want to have this horse checked. Surgical removal is recommended for melanoma

Whites and grays are susceptible to melanomas, have your vet biopsy it. My 26 year-old gray arab gelding has them, too. They are generally very slow growing and old age gets them before the lumps.

I would call the vet. It could be cancer like you said so that would be the safest thing to do.
