even a child is an only child you can prevent him/her for being a spoiled brat. its the parents responsibility to make sure that their son/daughter grow as a good and obedient child. it will always depends on how they grew up, the environment and how they being taught.

Absolutely! I only have one child and she is not a spoiled brat. She has been raised with discipline and the knowledge that you can't always get what you want. Sometimes you have to earn things. A lot of her friends were given new cars when they turned 16. Even SHE thought that it was ridiculous.
We've known children who have had no discipline from their parents. The parents give them whatever they ask for. The parents want to be their "friends". Those kids are so messed up! They'll probably go through life expecting to always get their way.
The only things you can't give your kids too much of, is love, love, love and respect for their individuality.

My daughter is an only child and of course she's a spoiled brat. (An 18 year old brat!)

Yes. I am an only child and my Mother went to the other extreme because she didn't want to spoil me.

My niece is an only child and the only thing she is getting spoiled by is alot of love.

Jep. But as it is up to the parents and at least American society has largely taken away our ability to parent, it is rare.
