This question actually takes 3 things into consideration: first whether anyone can grow their hair long enough to reach the bottom of the tower, second if hair is strong enough to handle the weight and third if there is pain involved. As far as the first portion, the story says that at age 12 her hair was 12 ells long, or 45 ft long. The current world record is for just under 18.5 ft, and grown over a period of 31 years, therefore it is impossible for Rapunzel's hair to actually be long enough for the endeavor, mainly because the longer a persons hair is the slower it grows, unless it has been trimmed routinely. As far as whether it would be strong enough to hold the weight, at the length suggested by the tale, yes it would have been strong enough. Although unlike an earlier poster mentioned, the Grimm Brother's version, which is considered the original, mentions her hair shining like gold and being kept in plaits or braids. The braiding would actually strengthen the hair. As far as whether it was painful, it wouldn't surprise me if the hair was wrapped around say a hook first and she held on to the other end, which would diminish the pain. In any case the witch had been using this method of visiting her since she was 12, and the prince came a few years later, so if there was any pain to begin with she was by now long accustomed to it.

I have never known anyone to have hair that was over 20 feet long. In order for her to let it out a second story window and it be where someone could actually reach it to pull up on, it would have to be about 20 feet long. I once had hair past the bends of my knees and if I put it in a braid down my back and held the top part of the braid, I honestly think someone could pull their weight and I would not feel it. The only problem is the length. It took me 20 years to grow my hair that long.

Actually Rapunzel wasa bald. The witch da cast a spell on her head so that vines grew on her head. So from afar, it looked like she had hair. The vines sort of also wrapped themselves around the tower. So it didnt hurt dear rapunzel when the prince climed up.
It could be possible for real, but can u think of nayone who wud really wanna try.

Hair is actually pretty strong.
Edit: Here's the requisite quote from the source:
Human hair has been used to make ropes when other resources were not available: the isolated Islanders of St Kitts used to make them to abseil down the cliffs to steal birds eggs; Japanese monks in the 13th century made them over 10 inches in diameter to lift bells weighing more than 120 tons.

I saw a version in a kids book where she tied her hair around a flag pole next to the window. That took the weight off her head and onto the pole. Someone earlier said how much weight it could stand... so if he was light I guess it would be possible with minimal pain...

Yes, it is possible, just like kissing a sleeping princess and waking her up is possible. Plus Noah had 2 of every animal on a boat for 40 days, and a big fat egg sat on a wall and sang songs.
Now a cow jumping over the moon, not possible, cows can't jump.

Hey,
I totally think it is possible for that to happen. I once seen some dodgy tv show and they were suspending people with like a few hundred strands of hair.
But then again how high was her window? Would it be possible to have hair that long?

It is possible if she has super thick hair like my ex-sister-in-law, with a ponytail of 5" diameter. The climb might be one tough mutah for her if she isn't using some type of hook, or pulley to support his weight during the climb. I'd tell him screw it, get a ladder to climb up, the dang cheapskate!

I don't think it is possible from that long of a drop, but maybe if the tower was like 8 ft high and he was real skinny. and yea it would hurt terribly, and she probably would still lose hair

Yeah, it's possible - hair would be easily strong enough to hold someone's weight if it was plaited together, but she'd need incredibly strong neck muscles, so she'd probably look more like a power-lifter than the sylphlike princess you see in the storybooks.
...oh, and she'd be screwed if prince charming was still wearing hs armour. :)
