I regret to inform you that the trip to Mexico that we all looked forward to has been canceled. The bus company has declared bankruptcy and informs me that the will be unable to refund any of our deposits.

I was really looking forward to this trip and its cancellation has made me angry. I know that you worked hard to get the money for your deposit, and I wish that there were some way I could get you at least a partial refund. Bankruptcy makes the company untouchable though, and by now they have spent all our money.

I hope that we can organize another trip in the future, or that you will have a chance to arraign your own trip.

Sincerely, yours
Your signature.

I didn't need 350 words (only 126) and I was able to put all the blame on the bus company. I made it sound just like you were also an aggrieved party with as much standing and loss as anyone else who signed up.

Dear David,
I regret to inform you that you not only lost your $100 non-refundable deposit for our Mexico trip because the bus company has filed bankruptcy, but you're going to have to finish the rest of this letter.
