It is caused by hard water. Hard water contains more minerals, like calcium and magnesium, than soft water. To remove the mineral buildup use Clorox. Pour a about 1/2 cup into the bowl and allow to sit for 30 minutes. Scrub and then flush.

I believe it's mold. I use those tablets that you can drop into the tank of the toilet to prevent it. Seems to be working

its a bacteria. bleach will clean it up.
dont use the ones that goes in the tank it will void the warenty on the toilet.

usually from the minerals in your water that oxidize, especially if you have well water. We get that, but we have a high iron concentration in our water.
