It is caused by hard water. Hard water contains more minerals, like calcium and magnesium, than soft water. To remove the mineral buildup use Clorox. Pour a about 1/2 cup into the bowl and allow to sit for 30 minutes. Scrub and then flush.

I believe it's mold. I use those tablets that you can drop into the tank of the toilet to prevent it. Seems to be working

its a bacteria. bleach will clean it up.
dont use the ones that goes in the tank it will void the warenty on the toilet.
