Due to the large size of its main claws and the weight of them the only way a crab can move is sideways

crabs walk sideways because their legs are articulated and do not provide quick forward motion. Although they are famed for walking sideways, crabs can walk in any direction.

maximum can walk forwards, yet strolling sideways is a protection on account that different fish and various aquatic animals wont consume one in the event that they anticipate its ill using fact doing so can kill them. so as that they walk sideways to grant the phantasm of being ill, its a protection mechanism.

because the crab god needs it to be this way for reasons unknown to anyone even the angels are at a loss on this one, the crab just gets on with it for the sake of a quiet life

it is simply the way their joints move. like our knees allow our legs to swing both backwards and forwards (if we want to go sideways, our knees play no part, it is our ball-joint hips that allow us to do that)
well their legs bend sideways, allowing them to move from left to right. they have no ball-joint hips and hence, cant stride backwards and forwards as we can from side to side

They are practising for the 'end of the pier show' when twenty of them link arms and walk from side to side of the stage singing, "Oh I do like to be beside the seaside..."

p.s. Crabs count as fish when I catch them from the pier.
So do plastic-bag-fish and seaweed-fish.

I'm not too sure as to why, but at least they won't cause any road accidents, they will always be on the sidewalk!
