Steve Irwin was on the surface 2.5 metres above the stingray so about 2.4metres. Ben Crop, a famous underwater photographer, said he was swimming in the same area filming stingrays when a bull stingray lashed out in the same way i.e. thrust it's tail upwards whilst on the bottom and it's barb broke the surface 3 metres above the ray. Luckily he was behind and not straight above the ray and the barb missed. Unfortunately it appears that Steve was right abov the ray and that is why the barb penetrated his chest.

The following is taken from ABC Report on Yahoo 7 news today at 9.25am
Friend and film producer John Stainton says he believes Irwin died almost instantly as he and a cameraman snorkelled over a shallow reef.

"He just floated over the ray and the barb came up and hit him," he said.

Irwin was filming segments for a new television show for his daughter Bindi when a stingray's tail pierced his heart.

The vision apparently shows a bull ray in close contact with Irwin.

The "barb" on a Stingray is located about 1/3 up the length of the tail from the base of the body. It is enclosed in a sort of sheath that covers it and can not be seen when it is at rest. Contrary to popular belief it is not at the end of the tail, and can not be swung around like a mace. The "barb" is actually sort of like a fish scale and grows like a finger nail does, up to 12 inches long depending on size and species of stingray. If it is broken off which happens allot it will grow back. It sort of looks like a fish hook tip with 2 barbs on each side with many barbs along the length of it sort of looks like this >>>>>>>>>>> ( This is the tip end ) It goes in easy but comes out ripping flesh. and to top that it also is covered in a poison that the ray secretes that causes extreme pain

Here's a source that says stingray barbs can be 25 - 30 cm long. They don't know the actual length of this one because they didn't capture the sting ray.

At the autopsy they will be able to determine how deep the barb penetrated.

I don't know how long the barb was - but the evening news said that a stingray's bard is like a knife - so basically he was stabbed in the heart with a poisoned knife. Poor steve.

About 10 inches. Now could we PLEASE get off this Steve Irwin kick?! It's sad and VERY unfortunate yes, but people die EVERY DAY! And some in more gruesome ways than Irwin. Now could we PLEASE MOVE ON! The world will continue to revolve in spite of this!
