This is a myth. I think it is based on the fact that women are more likely to have bubbly writing which appears neater, even though it is not. I have graded well over a thousand hand-written undergraduate assignments and in-class exams, and not only is a man's handwriting just as neat (or messy) as a woman's, but there are MANY men with swirly, bubbly handwriting and MANY women with illegible scrawls.

The source below says "According to Handwriting in America, there used to be this whole system where handwriting was a form of self-presentation: a woman’s penmanship was like her clothing, a man’s penmanship like his physical carriage. Sickening. The Victorian Age never ceases to amaze." I'm not entirely sure about that, but people who write a lot, tend to write neatly - people who just sign things seem to make them as scrawled as possible- my 20 year old daughter says my handwriting is "too neat" and could be forged more easily than hers which looks like it's been written in a moving vehicle. But at least I can read her writing - her father's , unless it's his tiny printing in capital letters, is illegible.

I think we women care more about appearance than do men, and are far more into "non-verbal" cues than men are.
When I say 'appearance', I mean "what other people think" - thus our kitchens are cleaner, our bathrooms have towels that are "just for show", we care about what label is on our jeans and what designer monogram is displayed on our purse, we keep our nails clean and trimmed (when was the last time my husband used clippers on his toenails??? I couldn't tell you when...)
When I say "non-verbal cues", I call attention to the way we expect you to know what we're mad about, that we think you should know what we want for our birthday, that we don't ask you out but you know that we like you, etc. etc. Women feel that our handwriting, and anything else that is in our power to control, should convey the type of person we want the world to think we are. Non-verbal cues.
Good question!

I don't know what you're talking about, I know plenty of males that write WAY neater than women, myself included. I think It depends on how a person was taught to write and how much they actually care whether their writing is neat or not.

men's and women's brains are different - fact.
the right side of the brain is used for creative actions
the left side of the brain is used for logic.
studies have shown that men use the left side of the brain more than women, and women use the right side of the brain more than men - it isnt a choice we make, it is simply the way we are.
this is why men tend to be better at solving logic questions like Maths whereas women tend to be better at essay questions. OK that is a broad generic example, but you get my drift. It is for this reason why women tend to be neater and tidier than men.
Note my use of the term "tend to" - i dont say "they ARE" because there are of course, exceptions to every rule, including this one.

As a general rule, women tend to pay more attention to detail, and handwriting is just one of those details!
