oh, and also it seems certain Americans cannot stand any critique from anyone, as proved by the second answer to this question

i am glad to be Australian. people are more easy-going here, even tho there are certain peoples who are ignorant and discriminative - but thats like every country right?
I do not like the Australian Government, as our Prime Minister sucks up Bush's ass. But on the whole, i think Australians are very tolerant of difference.

I'm an American and I totally feel you on this. Sometimes, I'm ashamed to be an American when I see how some of us behave. I'm not saying we are all this way-but just as there are ignorant people everywhere, I kind of think America takes the cake.
And I know I'm going to be bashed for this, and told if I don't like America to get out, oh boo hoo hoo, get over yourselves.
And by reading some of these answers to your questions....Americans are ******* arrogant pricks.

I am a first generation american, have lived about 1/3 my life in Europe (my dad was military). After coming back stateside I was appalled at how ignorant most americans are when faced with world events and culture. But there are many countries which are worse in similiar and differant aspects, however, given all these, I am still glad to be an American. But there are other nationalities which I would gladly take as well.
American's have become less homophobic towards women, but remain so towards men. I would argue that this will change over time, but also depends upon where you live. THe center of the US is very conservative and a place which takes a long time to change. While NY, SF, LA, Boston, are more progressive. TO say Americans are homophobic is like saying the french are panzies...well, ok there is truth in both those statements.

I'm sorry you have seem to have met only lousy Americans. How many times have you visited our country and where? Or are you basing this opinion only on the tourists you see and the media/tv? I hope not. I am not proud of everything we do as a nation but I am perfectly happy to be born and raised here. I have always had a fascination with Australia and someday wish to visit there. I know I'll meet alot of open friendly people. I'd love to drive one of those road trains across the outback just to say I have. We see alot of foreigners in our town for the "silly season" as we call the EAA airplane convention. Most of the visitors are nice, but boy if I had to judge each country on the ones I met....what a sad opinion that would be.

I'm glad that I'm not an American and am proud to be a British.
I don't like the brashness of some American people and the way they have to be bigger and better than the rest of the world. Also, how most Americans are bible thumpers, yet they have no problem about waving a gun in your face.
Its not that I hate Americans, because I don't anyone. I'm just not overly keen on the nation from what I have seen, heard and experienced.

...can I be an American who is NOT glad that she is an American?
I would much rather be an Italian... Americans are just so lazy! Of course, this is a generalization, but still. I mean, we have sooooo many obese people in this godforsaken country, and they aren't doing a thing about it! They are culturally uneducated, and many refuse to visit a foreign country because "The USA is," as many bumper stickers so bluntly put it, "the best country in the world!" Psh. BS. Pure BS.
As for homophobia, I think almost all countries have a certain degree of homophobia, but the US is certainly up there. Unfortunately, so is Italy...
Anyway, hopefully once a liberal steps up to the plate and is voted into office, things will begin to change, but for now, we are just SO tied up with the whole "church and state" thing. Those two things really need to become their own separate entities...
The country is beautiful--I love the country and the cities, but the government is another thing. Give me a sensible, reasonable government who won't fire me because of my orientation, or condemn me to an eternity in hell, then that'd be great. Other than that, I can't wait to get out of here.
I wish I were a non-American... I wish I lived somewhere in the EU...or Russia...

Lol - I knew the loud mouth idiots here would make your point. Hey, parts of the country are gay friendly, we have huge internal debate and critique, and as a people are quite diverse. Just, ya know, visit the blue states, much more reasonable people. ;) And, ye, we generally do give our opinion when it isn't requested. Annoying national habit, but I got such a chuckle reading thru that I couldn't resist. Dam, can always count on them red neck fools.

US is a nice place to visit but having lived there for several years i wouldn't bother again ...
Australia is better lifestyle and smarter people overall ,is easier to be a happy gay old man in Sydney with kids mortgage partner,ect... than it would to have to keep apologising for your existence in suburban USA...Canada's nice though also god bothers tend to be silent minority in Australia or maybe that's just cos i tend to hose them if they come to the door ....lol
I find overall a great many americans quite ignorant about life on so many levels but ime sure they will catch up someday...!

I was born in America, as were both my parent and their parents. I *do not label myself as an American* though. (Please don't tell Bush. I could literally be locked up for that.) I label myself by my ancestry: German, English, Irish, Dutch, and Native American. As a wiccan, I'm a person of the world. My responsibility and my home is the entire earth and all of its people. I'm considering moving back to Western Europe after college, but I kinda want to stay in the U.S. and fight for equal rights.

Are you basing your gladness on the fact that you are not homophobic or are there other reasons you are glad to be Austrailian and not American? Yes, Americans, in general, are homophobic, primarily because America was founded by God-fearing, fundemental Protestants as Republicans are so quick to point out. There is more acceptence for homosexuals than there was ten years ago, but change doesn't happen over night. It took over 100 years for blacks to gain equal civil rights in America.

I sure am. I have a cousin in California who, when she phones, forgets that she's talking to a Canadian, and boy, does she run us Canucks down. I've asked her not to phone anymore.
As for being homophobic, I don't think that any one country is, it's just some of the people in any country.
