Pruning can have a lot to do with it. Hydrangeas bloom from buds developed the previous year. (The only exception is a newer variety called "Endless Summer," which has a long bloom season because it blooms on old and new growth.) So if you pruned too severely last year, you may have removed the flower buds. When you prune hydrangeas, just nip off the spent flower head, because the dormant buds are already developing just below the level of this year's flowers.
